These Roman knight helms with grim, low-angled, visors emanate ruthlessness. They are the helms of coldblooded conquerors who would stop at nothing to slay their enemy and seize the spoils. And indeed, this is how Roman equites actually lived. They fought for personal glory and would take the armor and weapons of slain opponents as trophies---the higher the rank, the greater the glory.

These cruel helms were cast in the fiery depths of Newark, New Jersey by Crescent Metal Works. They are signed on the back and dated 1932. The felt on the bottoms seems to have been replaced at some point. Each bookend is about 4" wide and deep and 7 1/2" tall. Together they weigh a little under 4 pounds.
